Odysseus in “The Beggar and The Faithful Dog” was disguised as a beggar. Back in Greek times a mask or a disguise were worn by Greeks to look as if they were different people.Odysseus, returns home to find that his servants have been unfaithful to him and the suitors where being abusive. No one in the palace or around the palace recognized Odysseus, except his faithful dog Argos. The name Argos is a symbol of faithfulness. While Odysseus was gone, Argos had been neglected and abused. When Odysseus saw the sight of his dog, he cried over how badly Argos had been treated. The slaves and servants took advantage while Odysseus, their master had been away. Odysseus being the beggar was taunted by the suitors. The beggar than meets with Penelope. During this meeting the beggar tests Penelope. Penelope tells the servant, Eurycleia to wash the beggars feet. As Eurycleia is washing his feet she recognizes a scar on his leg. Eurycleia soon realizes that the beggar is Odysseus, because of the scar on his leg. Athena continues to work on Odysseus’ behalf. She keeps his identity a secret and assures him that he will vanquish all of the suitors.
